French President Emmanuel Macron stated that any attempt by Israel to annex parts of the West Bank would constitute a “red line” for the United States and could mark the end of Arab-Israeli diplomatic normalization.
Macron confirmed that he received this guarantee during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
He also revealed that he presented Trump with a tripartite plan for the future of Palestine, based on the New York Declaration, a document endorsed by more than 143 countries, proposing the exclusion of Hamas from future governance in Gaza and the West Bank.
Macron emphasized that the goal of his meeting with Trump was to ensure that America, Europe, and Arab states remain aligned. He added that France’s recognition of the Palestinian state aims to initiate a peace process, which he described as the best path to isolating Hamas. He criticized some Israeli officials for seeking to undermine any political solution.
“The objective of some is not to fight Hamas, but rather to block any path to peace. There is no Hamas in the West Bank,” Macron said.
He also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s strategy of total war, calling it a failure, as it risks hostages without reducing Hamas’ capabilities.
“There are as many Hamas fighters as before. From a practical perspective, total war is not working. This war is a failure,” Macron added.
