Hundreds of American generals and admirals from around the world have been called to an unexpected meeting next Tuesday with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth at the Quantico military base in Virginia.

The news was confirmed to CNN by several officials, while The Washington Post first reported the event on Thursday morning.

What makes this gathering unusual is the fact that no official has provided a clear reason for the meeting, sparking widespread speculation within both the military and political circles.

A well-placed source told CNN they had heard theories ranging from a “group physical fitness test” to a briefing on the current state of the Department of Defense, while others linked it to a possible large-scale dismissal of senior officers.

“It’s being jokingly called a ‘general squid games,’” one military official told CNN.

A congressional aide, commenting to CNN, added: “Unless Hegseth plans to announce a major new military campaign or a complete overhaul of the military command structure, I can’t imagine a good reason for this.”

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell officially confirmed only that Hegseth would “address his senior military leaders early next week,” without providing further details on the agenda or scale of the meeting.

The gathering comes at a time when the Trump administration has undertaken several significant changes in military hierarchy, including high-profile dismissals and orders to reduce the number of four-star generals by at least 20%, according to a decision made by Hegseth in May.
