The number of fatalities has risen to 39 following a tragic stampede at a political rally in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, according to local authorities.

BBC reports that among the victims are children. The incident occurred on Saturday in Karur, where tens of thousands had gathered to attend a campaign event for the popular Tamil cinema actor and emerging politician, Vijay.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin told reporters on the scene:

“39 people have died, while 51 others are receiving medical treatment.”

Further details regarding the cause of the stampede have not been officially confirmed, but earlier reports indicate a crowd crush and commotion as attendees tried to approach Vijay’s bus.

This is the second tragic incident linked to Vijay’s political rallies within a year, following the founding of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, in 2024.
