Special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, will travel to Egypt this weekend for negotiations regarding the details of a prisoner release and other aspects of Trump’s proposed ceasefire, according to two U.S. officials, as reported by CNN.
The planned visit follows Trump’s social media post stating that he believes the militant group is “ready for a lasting PEACE” and calling on Israel to halt airstrikes in Gaza to facilitate the release of hostages.
In the past 12 hours, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have killed 20 people, according to hospital reports. Meanwhile, Hamas has not unconditionally accepted Trump’s proposal, and a final ceasefire agreement remains uncertain.
The Israeli government and military are reportedly preparing for the first phase of a U.S.-proposed ceasefire in Gaza, after Hamas stated it is willing to immediately enter negotiations for the release of all hostages.
