Poland has scrambled its military aircraft and placed ground-based air defense systems on full alert after a new wave of Russian strikes targeted Ukraine’s Lviv region, close to the Polish border.

The overnight attacks involved drones and missiles, leaving at least two people dead, according to Ukrainian authorities.

“Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defense and radar detection systems have been put on the highest level of readiness,” Poland’s Operational Command said in a statement posted on X, cited by France24.

The Mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi, confirmed that the city’s air defense was “heavily engaged” in repelling both drone and missile attacks.

Meanwhile, the Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) called on both Russia and Ukraine to show “political will” to secure the area surrounding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant—Europe’s largest nuclear facility, which has been under Russian control since the start of the invasion.

As of Sunday, Russia has not commented on the wave of strikes carried out between Friday night and Saturday.
