EU and OSCE Condemn Killing of Judge in Tirana: Call for Strengthened Judicial Security

The European Union Delegation to Albania and the OSCE Presence in Albania strongly condemned the fatal shooting of Judge Astrit Kalaja and the wounding of two other individuals at the Court of Appeals in Tirana earlier today around 15:40.

The EU Delegation expressed deep shock at the incident and denounced the act as a criminal attack.

“The EU Delegation to Albania is shocked by the violent act that led to the death of Judge Kalaja and the injury of two Albanian citizens. We strongly condemn this criminal act,” the statement read.

The EU extended its deepest condolences to the family of Judge Kalaja and emphasized the urgent need to enhance judicial security:

“This tragedy highlights the urgent need for Albania to increase the security of judges and prosecutors and to take all necessary measures to ensure safety in courtrooms,” the declaration added.

The EU also reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to supporting judicial reform and strengthening the rule of law in Albania.

Similarly, the OSCE Presence expressed shock and sorrow, condemning the violent attack inside the Court of Appeals:

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the shooting at the Court of Appeals in Tirana, which took the life of Judge Astrit Kalaja and injured two others,” the OSCE said.

The organization extended condolences to the family and colleagues of Judge Kalaja and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

“The OSCE condemns this violent act. Attacks on judges are direct attacks on the rule of law and democratic institutions,” the statement emphasized.

The OSCE welcomed the swift arrest of the perpetrator and stressed the importance of a full and rapid judicial process to ensure justice.

“The OSCE stands in solidarity with Albania’s judicial community and remains committed to supporting efforts that strengthen the security and independence of the judicial system,” the statement concluded.

According to the Tirana Police Directorate, the shooter, identified as E. Sh., 30, fired at Judge Kalaja and two other individuals, R. K., 65, and E. K., 45, a father and son, who were parties in the court case.
