President of the Republic of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, is scheduled to meet today with Belgian Minister of Justice Annelies Verlinden and Minister of Asylum, Migration, and Social Integration Anneleen Van Bossuyt.
The two Belgian ministers have embarked on a three-day diplomatic visit to Kosovo and Albania, aimed at discussing prison overcrowding and the fight against organized crime, according to the Belga News Agency.
In an effort to alleviate chronic overcrowding in Belgian prisons, the Belgian government is reportedly exploring the possibility of renting or building a prison abroad to house non-resident convicts. During their visit to Albania and Kosovo, the ministers will hold exploratory talks about this potential initiative.
The visit will also include discussions on a Letter of Intent for Asset Sharing, which would allow part of the criminal proceeds confiscated in Albania or Kosovoāresulting from Belgian-led investigationsāto be returned to the Belgian treasury.
In Kosovo, the delegation is also expected to discuss a bilateral treaty on mutual legal assistance, aimed at strengthening long-term judicial cooperation between Belgium and Kosovo.
