Defense Ministers from NATO and the European Union gathered today in Brussels for a series of high-level talks focused on the growing threat posed by Russia, military spending, European defense capabilities, and continued support for war-torn Ukraine.

According to DPA reports, NATO ministers began consultations in what marks their first meeting since the alliance launched a new mission in September to strengthen airspace protection for Eastern European members, following a series of Russian airspace violations.

Another key topic under discussion is the sharp increase in defense spending, agreed upon by NATO leaders in June under pressure from the United States, aimed at ensuring that all members meet or exceed the 2% GDP defense target.

The NATO session will be followed by a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, a coalition of around 40 nations coordinating military aid and logistical support for Ukraine.

Previously led by the United States, the group is now co-chaired by the United Kingdom and Germany, reflecting a broader European commitment to sustaining Ukraine’s defense amid intensifying Russian aggression.
