Sreqko Spasiq, the candidate for mayor of Klokot from the Civic Initiative “Serbian National Unity”, has officially withdrawn from the race and joined the Serb List, the main Serbian party in Kosovo backed by Belgrade.
According to the announcement from the Serb List, Spasiq along with all members and councilors of his initiative joined the party because they “have unconditional faith in the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.”
Preliminary results had placed Spasiq in a runoff with the Serb List candidate, Božidar Dejanović, in the local elections. The Central Election Commission has been asked whether the runoff scheduled for November 9 will still take place after Spasiq’s withdrawal.
Spasiq stated that he wants to channel all contributions and resources of his civic initiative toward the Serb List, calling it “the political family that unites the Serbian people in Kosovo.”
“I, Sreqko Spasiq, announce to the public and all citizens of Klokot municipality that I am withdrawing from the mayoral race and will not participate in the second round of elections on November 9. Together with the former members of Serbian National Unity, now part of the Serb List, I will dedicate all my strength and energy to the victory of the Serb List,” the statement read.
