Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić claimed that Serbia would be the first in line for EU membership if it recognized Kosovo and imposed sanctions on Russia. He made the remarks in Brussels during the EU Enlargement Summit, organized by Euronews.
“Tomorrow we could impose sanctions on the Russian Federation. Tomorrow. Literally. Tomorrow we could say we recognize Kosovo. And here we are in the European Union. Tell me, do you want this policy? I don’t think we should recognize an independent Kosovo. I don’t think we should impose sanctions. Tell me, do you think we should? I don’t want to, but no problem, you do it within a year. And here you are in the European Union. It’s pure geopolitics,” Vučić said.
He added that it would be easier for Serbia to progress in the EU if it recognized Kosovo’s independence, or alternatively, gave up claims over the Kosovo Serb population.
“Some others, when they come to power, can change that policy, and then we will advance very quickly,” Vučić concluded.
