Ukrainian authorities report massive electricity outages across Kyiv and multiple regions following Russian airstrikes targeting the country’s energy infrastructure. Repair teams are working to restore power, but the disruption is expected to continue for several days.
Power Reductions
State electricity company Ukrenergo announced that scheduled electricity reductions of 8 to 16 hours will affect most regions, describing the situation as unprecedented since the beginning of the invasion.
“Reductions are a direct result of massive Russian drone and missile strikes on energy facilities,” the company said. Svitlana Hrynchuk, Ukrenergo spokeswoman, added: “It’s hard to remember a time with so many direct attacks on the energy sector since the start of the invasion.”

Government Response
President Volodymyr Zelensky assured citizens that repair teams are working around the clock in all regions. The intensified strikes come as Ukraine prepares for winter, with Russia targeting energy grids, gas storage, and pipelines to demoralize the population.
Nuclear Safety Concerns
IAEA Director Rafael Grossi warned of the risks posed by attacks on nuclear power plants. He stressed the need for “maximum military restraint” to ensure nuclear safety and prevent serious radiological incidents.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, the largest in Ukraine and currently under Russian control, has regained access to a backup power network for the first time in six months, alleviating critical issues with cooling systems and pumps.
Russian Military Statement
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed it conducted a “massive precision strike” targeting weapon production centers and energy infrastructure in Ukraine.
Impact on Daily Life
Several metro stations were forced to close due to power disruptions. The ongoing conflict, which began on February 24, 2022, has already caused thousands of deaths and displaced millions, with the West responding through strict economic sanctions.
