Following dramatic warnings from Germany’s Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius, that Europe may have experienced its “last peaceful summer,” Poland has now also announced heightened military readiness in response to potential Russian aggression.

Polish Military Alert:

  • General Wiesław Kukulka, Chief of the Polish General Staff, stated that Russia is preparing for conflict and that Poland is entering a “pre-war phase.”
  • He emphasized that the adversary is creating conditions to undermine public trust in the government, armed forces, and police, while preparing the ground for a possible invasion of Polish territory.
  • Authorities previously confirmed a sabotage incident on the Warsaw–Lublin railway line, highlighting the heightened security concerns.

German Preparations:

  • Minister Pistorius warned that a potential conflict between NATO and Russia could occur as early as 2028, earlier than previous projections of 2029.
  • Germany is undertaking urgent modernization and rearmament of the Bundeswehr, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz aiming to make it the strongest military in Europe.
  • Starting 2027, German citizens will undergo medical checks to identify potential reservists, and a substantial reserve force will be established for national defense.
  • Pistorius underscored that peace can only be ensured through strength and readiness, affirming Germany’s commitment to respond decisively to any attack.

International Reactions:

  • Moscow swiftly criticized the statements, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova asserting that Germany’s rhetoric clearly identifies it as the aggressor.
  • Pistorius defended the warnings, stressing that the threat is real and requires preparation, while NATO’s considerable deterrence capabilities, including nuclear forces, remain a stabilizing factor despite rising tensions.

This development reflects an escalating security environment in Europe, with both Poland and Germany taking precautionary measures amid concerns over Russian military intentions.
