At least 36 dead in massive fire in Hong Kong, over 270 still missing

A Hong Kong official has stated that at least 36 people have died in a fire in Tai Po, while 279 others remain unaccounted for.

According to local media reports, a baby and an elderly woman have been rescued, BBC Television reports.

Meanwhile, firefighters are still working to bring the fire under control. Dozens of apartments are reportedly still ablaze, and emergency teams are continuing their efforts in darkness.

Local media reported that explosions have been heard.

Many people have gathered near the burning buildings. Some are praying silently, while others are distributing water and food.

It is reported that over 700 firefighters and dozens of firefighting vehicles have been deployed to the scene. One firefighter lost their life while working at the site.
