President of the Democratic Party (DS), Srđan Milivojević, stated today that the government’s alleged attempt to shut down or subordinate the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime (TOK) represents an open attack on Serbia’s constitutional order, an effort to amnesty organized crime, and the most dangerous blow to the rule of law since its establishment.
Milivojević emphasized that members of the ruling structure — including figures close to President Aleksandar Vučić — are formally implicated in cases handled by this very prosecutor’s office, which is why, he argues, the regime is now attempting to either dismantle it or place it under political control.
He noted that in recent days, legal experts and judicial officials have publicly warned about attempts to weaken or dissolve TOK, while the prosecutor’s office itself issued an unprecedented statement accusing the government of unconstitutional interference and extreme pressure.
Milivojević warned that this is an alarm signal that no responsible democratic force can ignore, adding that lawyers, prosecutors, and judges must not silently watch what he described as a “state coup” carried out to protect criminal networks close to the ruling elite.
He said the DS is confident that the judiciary will resist such pressure and fully investigate those responsible, regardless of their surname, position, or political power.
Milivojević added that the so-called “anti-state mafia regime led by Aleksandar Vučić must face justice in a fully transparent process,” stressing that organized crime must never again become intertwined with state institutions.
“Institutional mechanisms designed to fight organized crime must not and will not be abolished,” Milivojević concluded.
