Romania’s Defense Minister, Ionut Mosteanu, has resigned after admitting he included false information on his CV regarding his education. He stated that he did not want his personal mistakes to distract from the country’s vital work of keeping Romania safe from Russia, according to Euronews.

Mosteanu’s resignation followed a report in the newspaper Libertatea this week, which revealed that his CV contained inaccurate details about his graduation date and the university he attended.

Romania and Europe are under Russian attack,” Mosteanu wrote on Facebook, announcing his resignation. “Our national security must be protected at all costs. I do not want discussions about my education and mistakes from years ago to distract those leading the country now from their difficult mission.”

Mosteanu served in Romania’s pro-European coalition government, which took office in June following repeat presidential elections. The first presidential vote was annulled last December amid suspicions of Russian interference.

Prime Minister Ilie Bologian thanked Mosteanu for his five months in office and announced that Economy Minister Radu Miruta would serve as interim Defense Minister.
