Albania today marks Liberation Day, commemorating the country’s freedom from Nazi-Fascist occupation. 29 November is the official date recognized for this historic event.
Shkodra was the final city to be taken in order to complete the mission of national liberation. At the end of November 1944, following the liberation of Tirana on 17 November and the majority of northern Albania, the liberation of Shkodra and its district remained the last decisive step.
On the morning of 29 November, Shkodra awoke liberated. Around 44 partisans fell as martyrs during this final effort.
The date 29 November 1944 marks not only the liberation of Shkodra but the official liberation of all of Albania from Nazi-Fascist occupation.
