As the administration of Donald Trump prepares for potential ground operations in Venezuela, a phone call between the White House and Caracas delivered a harsh ultimatum to President Nicolás Maduro: resign immediately in exchange for safe passage.

Reports indicate that during last week’s call, Washington insisted that Maduro and his key allies, including his wife Cilia Flores and their son, leave the country immediately to pave the way for democratic governance.

It is said that Maduro requested “global amnesty for any crimes he and his group may have committed,” which was refused.

“Secondly, they sought to retain control of the armed forces, similar to what occurred in Nicaragua in 1991 with Violeta Chamorro. In return, they would allow free elections.”

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday that he had spoken with Maduro by phone but declined to provide details about the conversation.

The confirmation comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Caracas, with Trump recently declaring that Venezuelan airspace would be “completely closed.”
