NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has delivered a firm response to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who earlier threatened Europe with the prospect of war, The Guardian reports.
Rutte emphasized that NATO remains a defensive alliance, but warned that it will take all necessary measures to safeguard its member states.
“In the end, NATO is a defensive alliance. We will remain a defensive alliance, but make no mistake — we are fully prepared to do whatever it takes to protect our one billion people and ensure the security of our territory.”
His remarks come amid heightened tensions following Putin’s renewed threats, which NATO officials have described as destabilizing and irresponsible. Rutte’s message underscores the alliance’s unity and readiness in the face of growing Russian aggression.
