Former EU High Representative Federica Mogherini has resigned from her position as Rector of the College of Europe.
In an official statement, Mogherini said:
“In line with the utmost rigor and fairness with which I have always carried out my duties, today I decided to resign as Rector of the College of Europe and Director of the European Diplomatic Academy.”
Her resignation comes after Mogherini and one of the EU’s top diplomats, Stefano Sannino, were detained on Tuesday by Belgian police during raids conducted as part of a fraud investigation. Sannino stepped down from his position at the European Commission on Wednesday.
Belgian police searched the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the College of Europe over suspicions of corruption linked to the establishment of a new diplomatic training academy.
Mogherini, a former Italian foreign minister, served as the EU’s top diplomat from 2014 to 2019 and had been leading the College of Europe since 2020.
