Three people were killed and five others injured after a man carried out a knife attack and threw a smoke grenade at a metro station in Taiwan on Friday, local media reported.

The smoke grenade exploded inside Taiwan Main Station, the busiest railway hub in the country, killing a 57-year-old man, according to TVBS News.

The attacker, identified as a 27-year-old man surnamed Chang, was reportedly wanted for evading military conscription. He was armed with a knife and smoke grenades. Reports also indicate that Chang set fire to his apartment, car, and two motorcycles prior to the attack.

Authorities discovered 25 Molotov cocktails in a hotel room where he had stayed two days earlier. The attacker also carried fire bombs during the assault. He died after falling from a rooftop while confronting police.

Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te urged the public to remain calm and follow official instructions, especially in crowded areas and transport hubs.

“If you see suspicious people, objects, or situations, please report them immediately to the police and station staff,” he said, according to Anadolu Agency via KosovaPress.
