Milutin Simović, a longtime official of Montenegro’s Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and a former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, has been arrested in Nikšić by order of the Special State Prosecutor’s Office of Montenegro, local media reported on Monday.

According to information confirmed to the daily Vijesti, Simović was detained on suspicion of criminal offenses related to organized crime and corruption.

Arrest Ordered by Special Prosecutors

The Special State Prosecutor’s Office has not yet disclosed the specific charges against Simović. Authorities stated that additional details are expected following his questioning.

Simović served as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2016 to 2020 and also held the position of Deputy Prime Minister during the government led by former Prime Minister Duško Marković.

Previous Allegations and Broader Crackdown

His name had previously appeared in investigations linked to alleged misuse of the agricultural budget and illegal disbursement of state funds, though no final judicial outcomes had been announced at the time.

The arrest of Milutin Simović is part of a broader prosecutorial campaign targeting former high-ranking state officials, which has intensified in recent months as Montenegro steps up efforts to confront systemic corruption at the highest levels of government.
