A strong winter storm system is sweeping across the United States, bringing snow and freezing rain to parts of the Upper Midwest today, before moving northeast on Friday and weakening by Saturday morning, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.
Freezing rain is forecast for northern parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, while on Friday the system is expected to affect Michigan, followed by western and central Pennsylvania, reports ABC News.
In New York City, the first snowfall is possible around midday on Friday (local time), with heavier snowfall expected after 4:00 p.m. Snow may continue overnight, impacting upstate New York, New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, as well as parts of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.
In central Pennsylvania, ice accumulation could exceed six millimeters, prompting warnings for drivers to exercise extreme caution, as power outages are also possible.
The National Weather Service warned that a dangerous mix of freezing rain and sleet will make travel difficult from Michigan through much of Pennsylvania and into the Mid-Atlantic region, including the cities of Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.
