U.S. Vice President JD Vance has issued a stern warning to Denmark regarding Greenland, signaling that President Donald Trump is “ready to do whatever is necessary” to protect U.S. interests in the Arctic.
His statements deepen already heightened tensions between the United States and Denmark—a NATO ally—over this strategically important island.
In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Vance criticized European security management in Greenland, singling out Denmark in particular.
He said: “Have the Europeans, have the Danes done a proper job to secure Greenland and ensure it can continue to serve as a base for global security and missile defense—and the answer is, of course, no.”
Vance accused Denmark of underinvesting in security and failing to properly protect the territory. “We will ensure that America’s interests are protected,” he added. “And I believe the president is ready to go as far as necessary to do that.”
Greenland has long been recognized for its strategic military and geopolitical importance, serving as a central location for missile defense and Arctic surveillance. In recent years, tensions between the U.S. and Denmark have increased over control and development of the island, raising questions about NATO cohesion in the region.
