Former Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich has passed away at the age of 59, his family announced.

“With deep sorrow, the Brnovich family announces the passing of Mark Brnovich. Best known as Arizona’s 26th Attorney General, a state and federal prosecutor, and a champion of justice, he will forever be remembered and cherished as a devoted father, husband, son, and brother. We are devastated by this loss and deeply moved by the love and support shown by so many wonderful people across the state and the country. The family requests privacy during this difficult time. Memorial arrangements will be announced when available,” the family said in a statement.

Brnovich had been nominated for the position of U.S. Ambassador to Serbia by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who later withdrew the nomination, ABC15 reported.

A member of the Republican Party, Brnovich served as Arizona’s Attorney General from 2015 to 2023. During his tenure, he was involved in several high-profile legal disputes.

Before being elected attorney general, Brnovich served as a federal prosecutor and as director of the state’s Department of Gaming, which regulates gambling activities. Later in his political career, he ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 2022.

In March 2025, President Donald Trump nominated him to serve as the next U.S. ambassador to Serbia. Brnovich had previously described himself as the son of immigrants who fled communism in Yugoslavia. His nomination was never confirmed by the U.S. Senate, according to American media reports.

Mark Brnovich is survived by his wife Susan and their two daughters, Milena and Sofia.
