German soldiers who had recently arrived in Greenland departed the Arctic island abruptly just 44 hours after their arrival, reported German newspaper Bild, which also published a photo from the airport.

Only a day earlier, Berlin authorities had stated that 15 German soldiers would remain in Greenland for a longer period than initially planned.

According to Bild, the decision for their sudden withdrawal was issued on Sunday morning without explanation to the troops. All scheduled meetings for the day were immediately canceled, with orders being straightforward: “Return home.”

It remains unclear whether Berlin’s decision is connected to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs on eight European countries, including Germany, which had sent troops to Greenland, or if other reasons were involved.
