At least 16 people have died and around 120 others injured as heavy snowfall sweeps across Japan, local authorities report.

The most severe impact has been on Hokkaido, where dense snow has caused major disruptions to rail transport. According to JR Hokkaido, nearly 1,000 train services have been canceled or significantly delayed, affecting over 140,000 passengers.

Authorities warn that delays continue as emergency teams work to restore normal operations, with snow removal and safety measures being prioritized across the island. The extreme weather has also hampered road travel and daily activities, prompting officials to advise caution.
