At least 30 people were injured after two trams collided in a horrific accident in France.

A large rescue operation is underway after the vehicles collided in the tunnel of Strasbourg station on Saturday afternoon, according to local media reports.

Five people are in critical condition, according to an initial assessment, French newspaper Actu17 reported. The news outlet added that a track switching error may have been the cause of the accident.

It is reported that one of the trams accidentally took another track before crashing into a second tram.

In a post on X, the French police warned: “Tram service is interrupted in both directions at Strasbourg station after a tram collision.”

Pierre Jakubowicz, a local councilor in Strasbourg, posted: “Major tram collision at Strasbourg station. Support and gratitude for the mobilized emergency services, and all my thoughts for the injured.”

Social media footage appears to show people attempting to open the doors of a tram while smoke fills an underground station after the accident.

Officials in Strasbourg later confirmed that a tram accident had occurred at Gare Centrale station in the city. They added that “multiple resources” had been sent to the scene, and passengers were advised to avoid Place des Halles, Gare, and Boulevard du Président Wilson.
