Bekim Haxhiu, a member of Kosovo’s Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), has called on the party’s entire leadership to resign by midnight, following the party’s request for President Justina Shiroka-Pula to return amendments to the law governing the Kosovo Specialist Chambers to the Assembly for reconsideration.
In a public statement, Haxhiu demanded that the party’s Governing Council convene within 48 hours and appoint an interim leadership to manage the party until new internal elections are held.
He argued that issues concerning the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and the fate of its former leaders facing proceedings before the Specialist Chambers in The Hague should not be used for political interests.
“The entire PDK leadership must resign tonight, by midnight,” Haxhiu wrote.
He added that the Governing Council should meet within 48 hours and establish a temporary leadership with a clear mandate to lead the party until new elections take place.
“Neither the KLA, the fate of its leaders, nor Kosovo’s future can be played with for political interests. We will not tolerate anyone doing so,” he stated.
Haxhiu described the issue as one that affects Kosovo’s struggle for freedom, the sacrifices of its people and the dignity of the state. He called for accountability and concrete decisions from the party leadership.
His demands come amid debate within the PDK over the proposed amendments to the law governing the Specialist Chambers. The party has asked President Shiroka-Pula to return the legislation to the Assembly for reconsideration.
Haxhiu concluded his statement by reaffirming his support for the KLA and its former members, calling for “justice and freedom for the liberators.”
