Member of the European Parliament, Tonino Picula, in an interview with the Croatian media outlet “24sata,” spoke about Serbia’s policies toward the European Union, its relations with neighboring countries, and its ambitions for a “Serbian world.”
Picula stated that the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, is using the European Union as an ATM.
The Croatian politician said that if a referendum were to be held on Serbia’s accession to the EU, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a spectacular result—implying strong opposition—given Serbia’s close ties with Russia and China.
Picula emphasized that Serbia cannot join the European Union until it recognizes Kosovo as an independent state and abandons its “Serbian world” policies.
“If a referendum on Serbia’s EU accession were held tomorrow, we shouldn’t expect a spectacular result. Vučić is using the EU as an ATM,” said Picula, who believes that Serbia will not be able to become an EU member unless it recognizes Kosovo’s independence and gives up its “Serbian world” agenda.
