An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck the coasts of the Silivri district of Istanbul today, shaking the city and surrounding provinces, reported Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). Earlier, a smaller earthquake, measured at 3.9 by AFAD and 4.0 by the Kandilli Observatory, was also felt in the region.

The stronger earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 6.92 kilometers, caused widespread concern in Istanbul, with tremors felt in surrounding areas. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The initial tremor, centered in the Sea of Marmara near Silivri, hit earlier in the day and was registered as a minor event. AFAD reported a magnitude of 3.9, while the Kandilli Observatory slightly adjusted it to 4.0, reflecting the usual small discrepancies in seismic measurements.

The subsequent earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2, also near Silivri, heightened anxiety in Istanbul, a city long prepared for seismic activity due to its proximity to major fault lines. AFAD’s quick notification confirmed the intensity and shallow depth of the earthquake, amplifying its impact across the region.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, with AFAD and local officials assessing potential damage. Istanbul, home to over 15 million people, remains on high alert for possible aftershocks, given its history of devastating earthquakes.
