At least six people have died, and dozens more have been rescued after a tourist submarine sank in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt.

NBC News reports that four Russian nationals were among those who died when the vessel sank near Hurghada. The submarine, named Sinbad, carried 45 passengers, including children.

The Russian Embassy in Cairo told NBC: “On March 27, at approximately 10:00, the Sinbad submarine, owned by a hotel of the same name, sank 1 km off the coast. In addition to the crew, there were 45 tourists on board, including minors. Most of those on board were rescued and sent to hotels and hospitals in Hurghada.”

The group had paid for a tourist trip to view the coral reefs in Hurghada, according to local media reports. The submarine had departed from one of the beaches in the tourist promenade area, Egyptian officials told the Associated Press.

Emergency and security services responded to the incident, including 21 ambulances, reported Egyptian newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm.

The submarine had been operating tourist trips in the area for several years. Hurghada is a popular tourist city located about 25 miles along the Red Sea coast of Egypt.
