Voters in Bulgaria headed to the polls on Sunday in the country’s eighth parliamentary elections in five years, in a race dominated by former president Rumen Radev, who is leading in opinion surveys.

Radev, known for his eurosceptic positions and opposition to military support for Ukraine, resigned from the presidency in January to enter the electoral race.

He is campaigning on promises of political stability and a crackdown on corruption in a country where unstable governments and frequent elections have fueled public dissatisfaction.

His campaign has also been strengthened by a strong presence on social media and pledges to reform Bulgaria’s political system, in a country of around 6.5 million people.
