Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today accused the main opposition party of attempting to obstruct a major corruption investigation targeting Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is currently in prison.
“Whatever you do, you cannot block the course of justice. It is the duty of the judiciary, on behalf of the Turkish nation, to crush those dirty hands. Over time, the public will see how far this network, which has entangled Istanbul like ivy, truly reaches,” Erdogan said, as reported by Reuters.
The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has endorsed Imamoglu as its candidate for the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for 2028. Imamoglu, seen as Erdogan’s key rival, was previously arrested amid an investigation into alleged corruption, sparking massive demonstrations across Turkey.
While most protests remained peaceful, nearly 2,000 people were detained during the unrest.
