EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has declared Tuesday, July 14, a milestone “Super Tuesday” for European Union expansion, marking the first time in over two decades that the bloc is hosting four separate accession conferences on the exact same day.

In a video statement shared on the social media platform X, Kos emphasized that the heavy diplomatic schedule reflects a powerful structural momentum within the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe.

“Today is a ‘Super Tuesday’ for the enlargement of the European Union. For the first time in more than two decades, we are holding four accession conferences on the same day… The four countries at the forefront of this process—Ukraine, Moldova, Albania, and Montenegro—are all taking major steps forward.”Marta Kos, EU Commissioner for Enlargement

The Agenda for the Accession Frontrunners

Commissioner Kos detailed the specific legislative advancements taking place across the candidate nations today:

  • Albania’s First Major Closures: The Albanian delegation, led by Prime Minister Edi Rama, will sit down at 19:00 CET to formalize the closure of its first three chapters: Chapter 25 (Science and Research), Chapter 26 (Education and Culture), and Chapter 30 (External Relations). A joint press conference is scheduled for 20:00 CET.
  • Montenegro Entering the Final Stage: Montenegro continues to consolidate its frontrunner status, moving into the final phases of formal negotiations by successfully bringing its total to 18 out of 33 closed chapters.
  • Ukraine and Moldova: Both Eastern European nations are taking corresponding leaps forward in their respective accession paths by advancing through their designated negotiation clusters.

From Momentum to Tangible Results

While celebrating the administrative and diplomatic breakthrough in Brussels, Commissioner Kos issued a pragmatic reminder to the leadership of all four candidate states.

She stressed that the geometric progress witnessed in Brussels must now be matched by domestic political will. According to Kos, the immediate challenge for these governments is to “transform this newly created momentum into concrete results on the ground,” ensuring that legal harmonization translates directly into institutional and economic benefits for their citizens.
