The new head of the EU Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX), Antero Lopes, met with leaders of the Serb List on Thursday, with discussions focusing on the rule of law, security and the rights of communities in Kosovo.

Lopes said he held an introductory meeting with Serb List chairman Zlatan Elek and his team to discuss issues related to the rule of law.

“During the meeting, I reaffirmed the Mission’s continued commitment to supporting security and human rights for all communities in Kosovo,” Lopes said in a statement.

Following the meeting, Serb List representatives said they had raised what they described as “institutional violence” against the Serb community, as well as alleged pressure and unlawful actions targeting Serb representatives and municipal authorities.

“The representatives of the Serb List particularly emphasized the continued institutional violence against the Serb people, as well as pressures and unlawful actions against Serb representatives and municipal bodies,” the party said.

According to the Serb List, such actions further undermine legal certainty, the functioning of local self-government and citizens’ trust in institutions.

The party also alleged that violations of Serbs’ rights, non-compliance with the law and the misuse of institutional mechanisms had become recurring phenomena, while claiming that an inadequate response from responsible institutions was contributing to a growing sense of insecurity among the Serb community.

The statements reflect the Serb List’s position on the situation, while EULEX has reiterated its mandate to support the rule of law, security and human rights for all communities in Kosovo.
