A Greek passenger evacuated from a cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak has been placed in quarantine at the Attikon University General Hospital in Athens, health officials confirmed.

The passenger, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly shows no symptoms of infection and is being kept under strict medical observation as a precautionary measure.

The evacuation followed an outbreak aboard the cruise vessel MV Hondius, which arrived in Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Passengers were removed from the ship on Sunday as health concerns escalated.

The Greek passenger was among 26 individuals transferred to Eindhoven, Netherlands, before being flown to Greece on a military C-130 aircraft under medical supervision. Upon arrival, he was immediately transported to hospital isolation facilities.

Authorities stated that the individual will remain in a negative-pressure isolation room for 45 days as part of preventive health protocols.

Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis reassured the public that there is currently no cause for concern, emphasizing that the passenger shows no signs of illness.

“At this stage, there is absolutely no reason for alarm,” he said, noting that quarantine measures are precautionary.

At least six people aboard the ship have tested positive for hantavirus, including one American passenger who remains asymptomatic. Three deaths have been reported since the outbreak began.

Health authorities across Europe continue to monitor the situation closely as containment measures are enforced.
