Iran has claimed that it stopped a U.S. warship from entering the Strait of Hormuz, alleging that two missiles struck the vessel near Jask Island after it ignored Iranian warnings.
According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, citing local sources, the warship was forced to turn back from the area. Iran’s navy also claimed it had prevented U.S. military vessels from entering the strategic waterway.
However, a senior U.S. official has denied the report, rejecting claims that any American warship was hit by Iranian missiles near the Strait of Hormuz, according to Axios.
The developments come after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States would begin escorting ships “safely” through the key maritime route, describing it as a “humanitarian gesture.”
Iran has warned that such a move would be considered a violation of a ceasefire and has pledged to defend the strait. Trump, meanwhile, stated earlier that any interference with U.S. operations “will be met with force.”
