Mark Rutte, Emmanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen have reacted to the U.S. decision to withdraw troops from Europe, stressing that the continent must assume greater responsibility for its own security, reports DW.

Rutte said Europe has clearly understood the message from Washington and is increasing its role within NATO, while also acknowledging American frustration with some European countries’ positions. According to him, Europe is “strengthening both its role and NATO itself.”

Macron emphasized that Europe must learn not to depend on the United States for defense and should build joint security solutions by increasing military spending and strengthening defense capabilities.

Meanwhile, von der Leyen stated that the European Union must enhance its military capacities to be able to defend itself more independently.

On the other hand, Kaja Kallas described the decision by Donald Trump as a “surprise,” but noted that discussions about reducing U.S. troops in Europe have existed for a long time.
