Russia has stated that it has accepted the apology of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić after the Serbian leader claimed that a “technical error” led to the country casting the “wrong vote” on a resolution regarding Ukraine in the United Nations General Assembly.
“The quick response regarding his country’s accidental vote in favor of an anti-Russian resolution at the UN has pleased Moscow,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in a press conference on February 25, according to Russian news agency Interfax.
Peskov emphasized that Russia understands it was “a genuine mistake.”
“Technical errors happen,” he added.
On Monday, February 24, the UN General Assembly adopted a Ukrainian-European resolution on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reaffirming support for Ukraine and its territorial integrity.
Serbia voted in favor of adopting the resolution text.
Vučić later stated that the Serbian delegation had “mistakenly” voted for the resolution and should have abstained, according to REL.
He apologized to the citizens of his country and took “full responsibility” for the incident.
Serbia, along with Turkey, is the only EU candidate country that has not joined the European Union’s sanctions against Russia.
