Prominent Kosovar legal expert and attorney Arbër Jashari has called on state authorities to take immediate action following a wave of alarming reports detailing systematic harassment, job dismissals, and intense intimidation targeting Kosovo Serb citizens who support alternative political parties over the Belgrade-backed Srpska Lista (Serbian List).
Characterizing the latest developments as “deeply disturbing and entirely unacceptable,” Jashari demanded that the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo enforce robust measures to ensure that minority voters can freely express their political choices without fear of retaliation.
“The integrity of elections must be protected under all circumstances,” Jashari stated, emphasizing that manipulating or coercing voters constitutes a serious criminal offense under Kosovo’s penal code. “Blackmailers, manipulators, and those sowing fear must be held fully accountable before the law.”
Jashari underscored that a functioning democracy is impossible without the political democratization of every ethnic community in the country, arguing that political pluralism within minority groups is vital and must be legally safeguarded.
The expert’s reaction follows a series of recent testimonies from local Kosovo Serbs, who reported being detained by border police on the boundary with Serbia and interrogated about their voting intentions for the upcoming snap parliamentary elections. The reported escalation follows a public directive issued by official Belgrade, explicitly commanding Kosovo Serb voters to cast their ballots solely for Srpska Lista.
