However, in the 77th minute, Cody Gakpo scored a beautiful header after a cross from Andy Robertson to seal the victory for the hosts.
With this win, Liverpool now leads the overall standings in the Champions League with 15 points from five matches.
On the other hand, Real Madrid drops to 24th place with six points after five matches, putting their qualification hopes in serious jeopardy, with only three games left to play.
