A potential Democratic majority in the US Congress could bring stronger support for Western Balkan countries on their path towards the European Union, Matthew Palmer has said, commenting on the possible impact of political changes in Washington.

Speaking to N1 television, Palmer also discussed the future of US policy towards the Western Balkans, particularly following the reduction of the American presence in the region and the abolition of the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Palmer said a Democratic majority in Congress could help increase support for the region’s European integration. He particularly emphasised the importance of normalising relations between Kosovo and Serbia, as well as the European integration of Kosovo and North Macedonia.

Among US politicians who have consistently supported the Western Balkans, Palmer singled out Gregory Meeks and Chris Coons, describing them as strong advocates for the region.

He said he expects US support for the European integration of Western Balkan countries to continue.
