Montenegro marks Statehood Day to commemorate July 13, 1878, when the country was recognized as an independent state at the Congress of Berlin, as well as July 13, 1941, when the Montenegrin people launched an uprising against fascism.
In the referendum held on May 21, 2006, 55.5 percent of voters who participated supported Montenegro’s independence.
Montenegro officially declared independence on June 3, 2006. Later that year, on June 28, it became the 192nd member of the United Nations, while on May 11, 2007, it joined the Council of Europe.
On June 5, 2017, Montenegro became a member of NATO.
