The world of cinema has lost one of its most recognizable figures. New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his roles in Jurassic Park, The Piano, and the television series Peaky Blinders, has died at the age of 78.

The news was announced by his family through a statement posted on the actor’s official Instagram account.

The cause of death has not been made public. However, Neill had previously revealed that he had overcome cancer after being diagnosed in 2022 with stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer.

According to the family’s statement, the actor passed away in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by his loved ones.

“It is with deep sadness that Sam Neill’s family announces his passing. Sam was surrounded by family and left this life with the dignity that always defined him. The loss was unexpected, but we are blessed that he remained cancer-free. We thank the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their exceptional care and ask that our privacy be respected during this difficult time,” the statement said.

Following the announcement, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to the actor, praising his contribution to Australian and international cinema.

“Sam Neill appeared in many beloved Australian stories and earned a special place in the hearts of Australians. He faced illness with dignity, humor, and strength. He will be deeply missed and remembered forever. Rest in peace,” Albanese wrote.

Sam Neill was born in 1947 in Omagh, Northern Ireland, and raised in New Zealand. He gained international recognition for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, while throughout his career he also appeared in acclaimed productions including The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, Event Horizon, The Tudors, Peaky Blinders, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

With a career spanning more than five decades, Neill appeared in over 150 films and television productions, becoming one of the most respected actors of his generation. For his contribution to the arts, he was awarded the title of “Sir” in New Zealand.

He is survived by four children and six grandchildren.
