NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has pledged that the alliance will “do everything necessary” to defend Turkey, which he said was targeted by Iranian missiles last month. His remarks came during an official visit to the country.
“Iran is spreading terror and chaos, and this is felt especially here in Turkey. In recent weeks, NATO has successfully intercepted ballistic missiles headed toward Turkey on four occasions,” Rutte stated.
He emphasized that NATO is fully prepared for such threats and will defend all its member states. The 32 NATO member countries are expected to meet in early July in the Turkish capital for a summit.
During his visit to the facilities of Aselsan, Rutte praised the “rapid development” of Turkey’s defense industry. He is also expected to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
