Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, expressed his intention on Monday to work closely with France and the rest of Europe to maintain the “most positive relations possible” with the United States. Speaking at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Carney emphasized Canada’s role as “the most European of non-European countries” and a “trusted and strong partner” of France, according to AP reports.
Carney’s visit to Paris marks his first official trip abroad since taking office on March 14. During the visit, Carney sought support from one of Canada’s oldest allies as U.S. President Donald Trump continues to challenge Canada’s sovereignty and economy.
Following his time in Paris, Carney is set to visit London, where he will meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III.
