North Korea has sent additional troops to support Russia’s war against Ukraine, according to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS). The agency reported that the exact number of soldiers is still being assessed, but military sources cited by Yonhap News Agency estimate that more than 1,000 North Korean troops have been deployed between January and February.
North Korea’s Growing Role in Russia’s War Effort
This latest development comes as North Korea strengthens its military ties with Russia. Pyongyang has already supplied Moscow with artillery shells and other weaponry, despite international sanctions. The deployment of troops suggests a deeper level of involvement, possibly including logistical support, construction work, or even frontline combat assistance.
The U.S. and its allies have repeatedly condemned North Korea’s support for Russia, warning that such actions further destabilize global security.
U.S. Urges Europe to Counter Russia
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on European nations to take a more active role in countering Russia’s aggression. In an interview with Fox News, Rubio stressed the importance of deterrence in Ukraine, urging NATO allies to increase defense spending.
“What Ukraine truly needs is deterrence. They must make it difficult for anyone to attack them again in the future. This should not be America’s burden alone—Europeans must step up. NATO is not at risk, but allies must invest more in defense,” said Rubio.
Zelensky to Meet Trump in Washington
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to visit the White House on Friday to finalize a deal on rare earth minerals. However, the most crucial meeting of his visit will be a closed-door discussion with Donald Trump.
Trump is reportedly pressuring Kyiv to finalize a $500 billion agreement, which could have significant geopolitical and economic implications. The outcome of this meeting may determine the future of U.S. support for Ukraine and its defense capabilities against Russia.
