Zdravko Ponoš, the president of the opposition “Serbia Center” (SRCE) party and a former Chief of General Staff, issued a stark warning regarding President Aleksandar Vučić’s high-profile state visit to Beijing.

Appearing on N1 Television late Monday, May 25, 2026, Ponoš argued that the trip exposes Vučić’s deep international isolation, forcing him to lean heavily on the only geopolitical pillar he has left. Ponoš questioned whether the extensive agreements signed in China serve the long-term sovereign interests of the Serbian people or merely act as a lifeline for the ruling regime.

The Threat of Debt Traps: Will Bor Become Collateral?

Ponoš expressed deep concern over the long-term macroeconomic consequences of Belgrade’s multi-billion-dollar infrastructure reliance on Beijing. He warned that if the absence of massive new credit lines during this trip means Serbia has officially hit its Chinese debt ceiling, the country is entering a dangerous financial phase.

Zdravko Ponoš on the Economic Risks: “This highly orchestrated ‘steel-clad friendship’ could very easily turn into a steel vise. The mining hub of Bor might end up as collateral for Serbia’s immense outstanding debts. If that is the case, Serbia will never lay eyes on Bor again.”

Mixing Party Interests with State Business

The SRCE party leader pointed out glaring anomalies in the official diplomatic protocol, accusing Vučić of using state institutions to advance the interests of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS):

  • The Inter-Party Memorandum: Ponoš noted that a Memorandum of Understanding was signed directly between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the SNS, yet it was treated within official state documentation as if it were legitimate government-to-government business.
  • The “Vojvodina Clan” Influence: The composition of the state delegation—which featured an overwhelming presence of figures from the inner “Vojvodina faction” of the SNS—further signals that the trip was engineered for the internal benefit of Vučić’s political inner circle.

Ponoš found the memorandum signed between the Serbian Ministry for European Integration and the China International Development Cooperation Agency particularly bizarre. “What on earth does cooperation between Serbia and China have to do with European integration?” he asked, adding that Brussels has finally received definitive proof that Vučić has no intention of leading Serbia into the European Union.

Flattery Will Not Work on Xi Jinping

Addressing Vučić’s diplomatic performance in Beijing, Ponoš dismissed the idea that the Serbian president could charm his host. He described Chinese President Xi Jinping as “the most serious and formidable statesman of our time,” noting that Xi operates purely on calculated geopolitical metrics rather than flattery.

“Xi cannot be charmed,” Ponoš remarked sharply. “Vučić previously tried to charm Donald Trump, which was theoretically possible. However, Trump is not charmed by sycophants—he respects a rogue, not a flatterer.”

Back Home: Belgrade Student Protests Dismissed as “Staged Sparing”

Turning his attention to volatile domestic unrest, the former military chief commented on the mass student-led protests that choked Belgrade’s Slavija Square over the weekend.

Ponoš dismissed the subsequent clashes and rioting as a theatrical, state-orchestrated illusion. He labeled the violence “a pre-ordered and organized sparring match between the police and state-controlled football hooligans,” designed to delegitimize the genuine student movement. “Unlike the historic anti-regime protests of March 15 last year, the state’s criminal networks were given a completely free hand this weekend,” Ponoš concluded.
