Pope Leo will lead his first Holy Mass as pontiff this morning, following a surprise visit to greet staff at his former residence.

In a historic day for the Catholic Church and the world, Robert Prevost, the 69-year-old cardinal born in Chicago, has been elected as the new Pope, taking the name Pope Leo. His election followed an unexpectedly brief conclave that ended with a clear two-thirds majority, even though he was not considered among the frontrunners.

As white smoke filled the skies over the Vatican, the world watched in anticipation to see the face of the new leader of 1.4 billion Catholics. When he appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, the crowd erupted with emotion.

Pope Leo delivered a simple yet powerful message in his first public address:
“Peace be with you all.”

These words moved thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square to tears and applause, creating a rare atmosphere of inspiration and unity.
