Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Vladimir Putin of “yet another manipulative ploy” after the Russian leader announced plans to pause fighting in Ukraine for three days next month.
Yesterday, the Kremlin announced that a ceasefire would begin at midnight on May 8 and last through the end of May 10. The pause coincides with Russia’s 80th anniversary celebrations marking the end of World War II.
In a Telegram post, the Kremlin stated that Russia “believes the Ukrainian side should follow this example.”
However, Zelenskyy questioned Russia’s motives.
“We in Ukraine never wanted a single second of this war and we have always said we are ready to work as quickly as possible with all partners who can help bring peace and ensure security,” he wrote on Telegram.
“Russia has consistently rejected everything and continues to manipulate the world, trying to deceive the United States.”
“Now, once again, another attempt at manipulation: for some reason, everyone is expected to wait until May 8 before stopping the fire just to provide Putin with silence for his parade. We value human lives, not parades.”
“This is why we believe and the world believes there is no reason to wait until May 8.”
The Ukrainian leader went on to say that the ceasefire “should not last just a few days, only to return to killing afterward.”
“It should be immediate, complete, and unconditional for at least 30 days to ensure it is safe and guaranteed,” he added.
